ENCHANTED ROCK BACKPACKING AND CLIMBING CAMPOUT

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area consists of 1643.5 acres on Big Sandy Creek, north of Fredericksburg, on the border between Gillespie and Llano Counties in the Texas Hill Country.

Activities planned for this campout include climbing, rappelling, and backpacking. Scouts should plan and bring warm clothing and shoes appropriate for hiking and climbing, as well as rain gear.  Use the layer method and bring a daypack to hold and stow excess clothes as you warm up.  Troop 266 will camp on the ‘front’, non-backpacking side of Enchanted Rock on Friday night.

Scouts will have the opportunity to work on requirements for the Climbing Merit Badge.  Troop 266 will be working with an experienced climbing outfitter, Rock-About, on Saturday for a day of climbing, belaying, and rappelling activities at Enchanted Rock.

After climbing on Saturday, the Troop will backpack around Enchanted Rock to the primitive sites and camp there on Saturday night to Sunday morning.

The cost for this campout will be $85 per climber, and $10 for those not climbing or rappelling.  Scouts should bring $10 – 20 for lunch on the Sunday return trip, and to cover spending money for other stops along the way. Meals at the campsite will be handled separately by each patrol, including the cost of the food.

Meals

Each camper should bring a sack dinner and drink on Friday for the trip to Enchanted Rock. Meals at the campsite will include Saturday breakfast, sack lunch, trail/backpack dinner, and trail/backpack breakfast for Sunday morning.

Front-side non-backpacking campsite meals:

Saturday breakfast will be on the ‘front’ side campsite using “out of the car” equipment and food.  Saturday   lunch (sandwiches and snacks) will be prepared and packed at the ‘front’ side campsite, and carried by each Scout to the climbing and rappelling area.

Primitive area campsite meals:

Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will be prepared at the “primitive” campsite area. Food and equipment will need to be backpacked and carried to the camping area.  Meals should require minimal cooking or prepared by adding hot water (Mountain House dinners, instant oatmeal, instant rice, Oscar Meyer pre-cooked bacon).
